Window treatments

Plantation shutters vs. blinds in Indianapolis homes

Both give adjustable light and privacy with tilting louvers or slats. One is furniture built into the window; the other is a lighter, less expensive treatment that is easier to change later.

Quick answer

Plantation shutters cost more than blinds, around $150 to $800 per window installed according to published market figures, compared with roughly $80 to $250 for faux wood blinds and $150 to $400 for real wood. Shutters last for decades, block more light and suit period houses and hard shapes; blinds cost less, stack out of the way and are easier to replace.

The basic difference

Shutters are rigid panels with louvers, set in a frame fitted to the window, that swing open like small doors. Blinds are slats on cords or tapes that tilt and lift up into a stack at the top. Both control light by tilting, but shutters stay in place when open while blinds can be raised completely out of the window.

That one difference drives most of the choice: shutters are part of the room's architecture; blinds are a treatment you can raise, remove or replace easily.

Plantation shutters and faux wood blinds compared

Cost

Published market figures put plantation shutters at $150 to $800 per window installed, depending on size, material and shape. Faux wood blinds run around $80 to $250 per window and real wood blinds around $150 to $400. Custom blinds in general run $50 to $500 per window for materials.

Across a whole house, shutters are the larger investment, but they are often treated as a permanent upgrade rather than a replaceable treatment. Our plantation shutters and custom blinds pages cover what drives each price.

Light, privacy and view

Closed shutters block more light than closed blinds because the louvers are thicker and the frame seals the edges, and wide louvers give a clearer view when open. Blinds can be raised entirely for a full, unobstructed view, which shutters cannot do; an open shutter panel still sits beside the window.

For bedrooms that need real darkness, neither is fully blackout. A blackout shade behind the shutters, or a blackout cellular shade instead of blinds, is the answer there.

Durability and cleaning

Shutters last for decades. Composite shutters tolerate humidity and sun, and there are no cords to fray. Blinds wear faster: cords and ladders eventually need restringing, and slats can bend or crack, though good blinds last many years and repairs are simple.

Shutters are easier to dust, with a cloth along each louver. Blinds collect dust on every slat and are more tedious to clean, especially horizontal blinds in kitchens.

Which windows suit each

Shutters suit front windows, bay windows, arched and odd-shaped windows, and period houses with substantial trim. Blinds suit budgets, rentals, windows above counters where panels would swing into things, and rooms where you want the window completely clear during the day.

In older neighborhoods with stained or painted woodwork, hardwood shutters matched to the trim often look original to the house. In newer houses with plain trim, both work, and many owners use shutters on the street side and blinds elsewhere. A consultation can settle it window by window.

Mixing them in one house

Mixing is common and usually looks deliberate when colors match: white composite shutters on the front of the house and white faux wood blinds in the back bedrooms, for example. Keeping slat and louver sizes similar helps them read as one scheme from outside.

Measure every window once and decide per window. That keeps the cost where it matters most and avoids paying shutter prices in rooms where blinds do the job.
