Quick answer

Roller and solar shades in Indianapolis are a single panel of fabric on a tube, measured to each window and installed inside or outside the frame. Light-filtering fabric softens light, blackout blocks it, and solar screen cuts glare and heat while keeping the view. Market figures put solar shades around $50 to $350 per window installed.

What the job involves

How to choose the fabric

Updated September 2026

Roller shades differ mainly by fabric. Light-filtering fabrics give privacy and soft light; blackout fabrics block it for bedrooms and media rooms; solar screens are woven mesh rated by openness, from about one percent, which blocks the most glare, to higher percentages that keep more of the view. A dual roller puts a sheer and a blackout on one bracket so you choose per hour of the day.

We measure and install roller and solar shades from Hunter Douglas, Graber and Levolor, and we motorize them with Lutron or Somfy systems on our motorized shades page. For more insulation, compare cellular shades.

Variations of this job

The roller & solar shades jobs we get called for

Light-filtering roller

Light-filtering roller shades soften daylight and give daytime privacy without darkening the room. They are the everyday choice for living rooms, kitchens and offices. Fabrics range from plain linens to textured weaves, and the shade can roll from the back of the tube for a tighter fit to the glass or from the front to clear handles and cranks. A cassette or fascia at the top hides the roll for a finished look, especially on outside mounts. We hold samples in the window so you see the light they let through.

Blackout roller

Blackout roller shades use an opaque fabric that blocks light through the shade itself. Like any inside-mounted shade, they leave a thin gap at each side, so for bedrooms and media rooms we often mount them outside the frame with an overlap, or add side channels that close the gap entirely. They are also the simplest way to darken a room behind drapery, since the flat shade sits close to the glass and the drapery hangs in front. The bottom bar is weighted so the shade hangs flat.

Solar screen shades

Solar screen shades are woven mesh that cuts glare and heat from the sun while you can still see out during the day. The openness factor sets the balance: lower openness blocks more heat and glare with less view, higher openness keeps more view. Darker fabrics actually give a clearer view out than light ones. At night, with lights on inside, solar screens do not give privacy, which is why they are often paired with a blackout layer. We show openness samples against the actual window at the measure.

Dual roller

A dual roller shade mounts two shades on one bracket: usually a solar screen or light-filtering shade in front and a blackout shade behind. You lower the screen during the day to cut glare and the blackout at night for privacy and sleep. It solves the solar screen's nighttime privacy problem without adding drapery. The bracket needs more depth, so we check frame depth at the measure, and motorized versions let you run each layer separately. Both layers are adjusted to stop at the same line.

Local context

How this work runs around Indianapolis

A normal Indianapolis year has about a hundred days with highs of 80 degrees or warmer and around twenty at 90 or above, and west-facing rooms take the worst of it in the late afternoon. That is where solar screens earn their place: lowered on a July afternoon they cut the glare and heat through the glass while you can still see the yard. On north and east windows, a light-filtering fabric is usually all a room needs.

Timeline

From measure to installed shades

After the measure and fabric choice, custom roller shades usually take a few weeks to manufacture. Installation is typically a single visit, and a whole house of shades is often installed in a day, with every shade adjusted and its lift system tested before we leave.
