Quick answer
Blind and shade repair in Indianapolis covers restringing lift cords and ladders, replacing broken slats and vanes, converting corded blinds to cordless, and servicing motorized shades. Most repairs are done in one visit with parts matched to the blind; when a treatment is too old for parts, we quote a replacement instead.
What the job involves
When a repair makes sense
Updated September 2026
A good-quality blind or shade usually fails at a small part: a lift cord, a cord lock, a ladder string, one slat or a motor battery. Replacing that part costs a fraction of a new treatment. We carry common cords, ladders and cord locks, and we source matched parts for Hunter Douglas, Graber, Levolor and Bali products when the model is still supported.
When a blind is brittle, discontinued or cheaper to replace than repair, we say so and quote a new one through our custom blinds or cellular shades pages rather than repairing something that will fail again.

Warning signs
Signs a blind or shade needs repair
Hangs crooked
One side lower than the other usually means a stretched or broken lift cord.
Slats will not tilt
A broken tilter or ladder string stops slats from turning.
Cord will not lock
A worn cord lock lets the blind slide down on its own.
Missing or cracked slats
Individual slats and vanes can usually be replaced.
Shade stops halfway
Motorized shades often need a battery charge or limit reset.

Variations of this job
The blind & shade repair jobs we get called for
Restringing
Lift cords fray, and the ladder strings that hold the slats break with age and sun, which is why a blind hangs crooked or will not lift evenly. Restringing replaces the lift cords and, if needed, the ladders, threading them through every slat and resetting the cord lock so the blind raises level. It is the most common repair we do and keeps a good wood or faux wood blind in service for years. Cellular and pleated shades can often be restrung the same way.
Cord-to-cordless conversion
Many older blinds have long looped cords that are a strangulation hazard for young children and pets. Where the headrail allows it, we convert them to a cordless lift or shorten and secure the cords with safety devices, and replace the tilt cord with a wand. When a blind cannot be converted safely, we recommend a cordless replacement for that window. It is one of the most useful repairs in a house with young children or visiting grandchildren. Tilt cords are swapped for a wand on the same visit.

Broken slat replacement
A single cracked slat, a vane snapped off a vertical blind, or a bent aluminum slat can usually be replaced without replacing the whole blind. We match the slat size, color and material, or take a spare from the bottom of the blind where it will not be missed. For vertical blinds, individual vanes and the carriers that hold them are replaceable, which fixes most of the problems people notice on a sliding door. Bottom rails and end caps are replaced the same way.
Motor and battery service
Motorized shades that stop responding usually need a charged or replaced battery, a re-paired remote, or reset upper and lower limits, all of which we handle in one visit. If a motor has failed, we check whether the manufacturer still supplies a replacement and fit it. We also re-pair shades to a new hub or phone after a router change, and add a hub or scheduling to motorized shades that were only ever run by remote. Every shade is run through its full travel before we leave.

Local context
How this work runs around Indianapolis
On the east side around Warren Park, where most houses were built between 1950 and 1970 and residents skew older, many homes still have blinds that have hung in the same windows for decades. Most of our repair calls from that part of Indianapolis are restringing and cord-to-cordless conversions on well-made wood blinds that are worth keeping, and the conversion often matters most when grandchildren visit.
Doing it yourself vs. calling us
Fixing a blind yourself versus calling us
| Step | Doing it yourself | When we do it |
|---|---|---|
| Restringing | Rethreading every slat by guesswork | Cords and ladders matched and reset level |
| Parts | Generic cords that fray again | Matched parts for the brand |
| Motors | Resetting without instructions | Limits, pairing and batteries handled in one visit |
Replacing a single vane on a vertical blind is fair DIY. Restringing a two-inch wood blind and motor service are where it usually goes wrong.
