What interior painting costs in Indianapolis, and why quotes differ
Two quotes for the same house can be thousands of dollars apart. Most of that gap is prep, product and what each painter counted as a surface.

Quick answer
Interior painting in Indianapolis usually lands between $2 and $6 per square foot of floor area for walls, or around $4.70 per square foot once trim and ceilings are included, according to published market data. A single room typically runs $350 to $850. Prep, ceiling height and how many surfaces are included decide where a house falls.

The ranges, and what they include
Published market figures put walls-only interior painting at $2 to $6 per square foot of floor area. Include ceilings, trim and doors and the national figure rises to about $4.70 per square foot. A single room usually costs $350 to $850, and an accent wall adds roughly 20% to 30% to that room because of the extra cut line, primer and drying time.
Those numbers are planning ranges, not quotes. Two painters can both be inside them and still be far apart, because one counted ceilings and trim and the other did not, or one planned a full patch-and-prime day and the other planned to paint over what is there.

Why the same house gets very different quotes
The biggest variable is prep. A wall with fifty years of nail pops, cracks over door frames and old patches needs a day of repair before any color goes on, and that is common here: the typical Indianapolis house was built around 1974. The second variable is surfaces: walls only, walls and ceilings, or everything including trim and doors roughly doubles the brush work.
Product matters less than people expect but still counts. A premium scrubbable satin in halls and kids' rooms costs more per gallon than a builder flat and lasts longer between repaints. Finally, furniture: an empty house paints far faster than a lived-in one where everything has to be moved and wrapped.
How to compare two estimates
Put the estimates side by side and look for five things: which surfaces are included, how many coats, what prep is listed, which product line and sheen, and whether furniture moving and cleanup are included. An estimate that names none of these is not a lower price, it is a smaller job.
Ask what happens with a water stain, a crack that returns and glossy trim. The answers should be a stain-blocking primer, tape or mesh on the crack, and scuff-sanding before paint. Our own scope is laid out on the interior painting page so you can compare it line by line.

Call (317) 680-1946Where people save money without cutting corners
Moving small furniture and clearing shelves yourself saves labor time. Choosing one wall color for connected rooms reduces cut lines and color changes. Painting ceilings and walls in the same job costs less than two separate visits because setup and protection are done once.
Where not to save: prep and primer. Skipping them is how a paint job fails within a year and costs twice. If the walls need real repair, see drywall repair before you compare paint prices.
What to have ready before the estimate visit
A walk-through goes faster and the quote comes out more accurate when you have a room list and know which surfaces you want included: walls only, or walls, ceilings, trim and doors. If you already have colors, have the names or chips ready; if not, say so and plan color selection into the visit.
Point out anything you already know about: a ceiling stain, a crack that keeps coming back, a room that was painted with a glossy finish, or furniture that cannot be moved. Those are the items that change the price, and it is better that they are in the quote than discovered on paint day.
What a fair quote looks like
A fair quote names the rooms and surfaces, the prep steps, two finish coats, the product and sheen, and how long each room will be out of service. It comes after someone has looked at the walls with a light, not over the phone from square footage alone.
If you want a second set of eyes on colors before pricing, our color consultation settles colors and sheens in your own light first.
FAQ
Questions this guide gets asked
Published market figures put a single room at $350 to $850, depending on size, height and repairs.
Not always. Ask, because ceilings and trim change the price significantly.
It is most of the labor. Patching, sanding and priming take longer than rolling color.
The paint is a small share of the total; labor and prep dominate.
A range, yes. A real quote needs someone to look at the walls.
