Speedway was laid out in 1912 for the founders of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, which opened in 1909, and incorporated as a town in 1926. Its biggest growth came between 1950 and 1970, when the population nearly tripled, and it had 13,952 residents at the 2020 census.
