Porch Painting in Indianapolis: freshly finished room

Exterior Painting in Indianapolis

Porch painting in Indianapolis

A porch floor worn to bare wood by the door, a ceiling shedding paint, and railings flaking at every joint. A porch is the hardest-working painted surface on a house, and it takes a different product for each part.

Quick answer

Porch painting in Indianapolis splits the porch into its parts: floors get a floor and porch enamel over sanded, primed boards; ceilings get an exterior enamel; columns, railings and lattice are scraped, repaired and brushed. The porch is usually finished in two to four days, with the floor done last and kept off-limits until it cures.

What the job involves

Why a porch needs three different products

Updated September 2026

Wall paint on a porch floor wears through in a season, and floor enamel on a ceiling is wasted money. We use a floor and porch enamel from Benjamin Moore, Sherwin-Williams or Behr on the decking, an exterior trim enamel on columns and railings, and exterior enamel on the ceiling. Each goes over its own prep: floors sanded and primed where bare, rails scraped to sound paint, ceilings scraped and sanded along the beadboard.

Rotted floorboards, column bases and rail caps are replaced first under wood rot repair. Composite and pressure-treated decks follow our deck staining process instead.

What moves the price

What moves the price of porch painting

No sourced porch-specific figure is quoted here; porches are priced by their parts.

  1. Floor area Decking is priced by square footage and condition.
  2. Ceiling area Beadboard takes more scraping and brushing than flat stock.
  3. Columns and balusters Each baluster and column is hand work.
  4. Rot repair Replacing boards, bases and rail caps is priced separately.
  5. Steps and lattice Treads, stringers and lattice panels add pieces.
  6. Existing paint condition Heavy peeling means more scraping and priming.
  7. Weather window Floor enamel needs dry days to cure before traffic.

Variations of this job

The porch painting jobs we get called for

Porch floor paint

Tongue-and-groove porch floors wear in a path from the steps to the door and peel where water sits against the house. We sand the floor, scrape loose paint, replace soft boards, and spot-prime bare wood with an exterior primer. Two coats of floor and porch enamel follow, with a fine anti-slip additive stirred into the final coat on the steps and at the door. Gray remains the classic color because it hides dirt. The floor is painted last and roped off until it can take foot traffic.

Porch ceiling

Porch ceilings peel in long curls when moisture gets into the beadboard from a roof leak above or when interior paint was used on them. We check for the leak, scrape the loose paint, sand the beadboard grooves, prime bare wood and brush two coats of exterior enamel into the grooves so no bare edge is left. Pale blue is the tradition and still the most requested; white and soft gray are the other usual choices. Fixtures and fans are removed or wrapped.

Columns and railings

Columns rot at the base where they sit on the floor, and railings fail at the joints where balusters meet the rails. We probe every base and joint, replace or consolidate soft wood, re-caulk joints that are designed to be sealed, and leave drip edges open. Every baluster is scraped and brushed by hand. Round columns are sanded along their length so the finish reads as one surface, and hollow columns get their bases checked from inside where we can reach.

Steps and lattice

Porch steps take the most traffic and water on the whole porch, so they get the same floor enamel as the decking with an anti-slip additive on every tread. Stringers and risers are checked for rot at the ground line. Lattice skirting is usually easier to take down and spray than to brush in place; broken sections are replaced with matching lattice before painting. Vinyl lattice is washed rather than painted unless the color is changing, since it never needed paint to last.

Local context

How this work runs around Indianapolis

North Irvington Gardens holds more than 840 houses built mostly between 1910 and 1955, Craftsman bungalows and American Foursquares among them, and in Irvington next door the same styles go back further. Those houses were built around deep front porches with tongue-and-groove floors and beadboard ceilings, so porch work there is mostly careful restoration of original wood, board by board, rather than a quick repaint.

Timeline

How long the porch is out of use

Most porches take two to four days. The ceiling and rails go first while the porch is still usable, and the floor is painted last. Floor enamel needs its cure time before foot traffic and longer before furniture goes back, so we plan the floor day around dry weather and leave a side entrance open.
