Quick answer
Stucco painting in Indianapolis starts with washing, then repairing cracks and letting the patches cure, which can take one to six weeks, then priming and applying two coats of a breathable acrylic or an elastomeric coating. Published market figures put a stucco house at $3,600 to $7,200, or $1.80 to $3.60 per square foot, depending on size, texture and condition.
What the job involves
Why stucco needs a different approach from siding
Updated September 2026
Stucco is a porous cement surface that absorbs water and lets it dry back out. A coating that traps moisture behind it blisters and peels, and hairline cracks let water in if they are painted over without repair. So the job is about choosing a coating that breathes or bridges cracks, and doing the repairs early enough for them to cure before paint.
We use masonry and elastomeric lines from Sherwin-Williams, Benjamin Moore and PPG and choose between them by the wall's condition. The washing step matches our soft washing, and trim around stucco follows the exterior trim process.

Choosing between the options
Acrylic, elastomeric or mineral coating
| Consider | Acrylic masonry | Elastomeric | Mineral/limewash |
|---|---|---|---|
| Breathability | Good | Lower, forms a thick film | Excellent |
| Crack bridging | Minimal | Bridges hairline cracks | None |
| Best for | Sound stucco, EIFS | Stucco with recurring hairline cracks | Older soft stucco, historic houses |
| Material per wall | Standard | Much more | Standard |
We choose the coating by the wall's condition and age, not by color.
What moves the price
What sets the price of stucco painting
Market figures put a stucco house at $3,600 to $7,200, or $1.80 to $3.60 per square foot, with pressure washing around $200 to $420 before painting.
- Wall area and stories Measured stucco surface and staging for upper walls.
- Texture Rough textures take more paint than smooth finishes.
- Crack repair Repairs must cure, which can add time between repair and paint.
- Coating type Elastomeric uses far more material per wall than acrylic.
- Stucco type EIFS needs inspection and compatible coatings.
- Half-timbering and trim Timbers and trim are separate brush work in a second color.
- Color change Large color shifts can need an extra coat.
Ranges are published market figures for planning only, not a quote from us; your price depends on the factors above.
Variations of this job
The stucco painting jobs we get called for
Traditional cement stucco
Traditional three-coat cement stucco is hard, porous and textured, and it drinks paint on the first coat. We wash it to remove dirt, chalk and algae, fill hairline cracks with a masonry caulk or patching compound, prime with a masonry primer where the surface is chalky or patched, and apply two coats sprayed and back-rolled so the paint reaches into the texture. A breathable acrylic masonry paint suits sound walls; elastomeric suits walls with recurring hairline cracks. Downspouts and sprinklers that wet the wall are pointed out as we go.
Synthetic stucco (EIFS)
Synthetic stucco, or EIFS, looks similar but is a foam insulation board with a thin acrylic finish coat, and it is softer and more sensitive to water getting behind it. We tap and inspect around windows, doors and the bottom edge before painting, because damage there has to be repaired by a stucco specialist first. EIFS takes an acrylic coating compatible with its finish, not a heavy elastomeric that can trap moisture. Dark colors are kept within the manufacturer's heat limits.
Tudor half-timber stucco
Tudor Revival houses combine stucco panels with dark wood half-timbering, and painting them is two jobs in one. The stucco panels get masonry paint in a light color while the timbers are scraped, repaired, primed and painted or stained dark, with a clean line where they meet. Timbers rot at their bottom ends and where they meet the stucco, so we probe each one. On older houses the stucco is often softer lime-based material that needs a breathable coating rather than elastomeric.

Crack repair before paint
Hairline cracks under a sixteenth of an inch are filled with an elastomeric patch or bridged by an elastomeric coating. Wider cracks are opened, filled with a masonry patching compound and textured to match the surrounding wall. Patches have to cure before paint goes on, from about a week for small repairs to as long as six weeks for fresh stucco, so we schedule repairs first and paint later. Cracks that keep returning or run diagonally from window corners can point to settling that we flag before painting.

Local context
How this work runs around Indianapolis
Stucco in Indianapolis is concentrated in the period-revival houses of the 1920s, whose half-timbered facades set stucco panels between dark timbers, and the North Meridian Street district is one of the state's best-known collections of them. Historic Meridian Park in Mapleton-Fall Creek has its own mix of Colonial Revival, Craftsman and Tudor Revival houses. Stucco on houses that old is usually softer than modern stucco, which is why breathable coatings and careful crack repair matter more there than the color.
