About Cedar Lake
A resort lake turned growing town
Cedar Lake surrounds an 800-acre glacial lake, the largest natural lake in Northwest Indiana. After the Monon Railroad reached its western shore in 1882 it became a resort for Chicagoans with dozens of hotels. The town incorporated in 1967 and grew from 9,279 residents in 2000 to 11,560 in 2010 and 14,106 at the 2020 census.
That history gives Cedar Lake two kinds of houses: older cottages near the water from the resort era, and new subdivisions behind them. Lakeside homes take sun and moisture off the water, which shows first on decks, porches and trim.
