Guide illustration for paint or replace cabinets

Kitchens

Should you paint or replace your kitchen cabinets?

Most kitchens do not need new cabinets. They need new color on boxes that are still sound. The question is how to tell which kitchen you have.

Quick answer

Painting kitchen cabinets in Indianapolis typically costs $900 to $3,500 for a whole kitchen according to published market data, about 5% to 10% of the cost of new cabinet boxes. Painting is the right call when the boxes are sound and the layout works; replacement makes sense when boxes are water-damaged, the doors are failing thermofoil, or the layout itself is the problem.

Start with the boxes, not the doors

Open every cabinet and look inside. Solid wood or plywood boxes that are square, dry and firmly attached to the wall can take paint for many more years. Particleboard that has swollen under the sink, sagging shelves and boxes pulling away from the wall are signs the cabinets themselves are at the end.

Then look at the layout. If the kitchen works, painting keeps everything you like and changes the look. If the layout is the problem, no finish will fix it, and replacement or a remodel is the real project.

What each route costs

Published market figures put a painted kitchen at $900 to $3,500, and a 30-cabinet kitchen commonly at $1,500 to $3,000. Refinishing, meaning stripping and re-staining without a color change, runs about $800 to $2,500. By the same source, painting costs roughly 5% to 10% of new cabinet boxes.

Those gaps are why most calls about tired kitchens end in paint. The detail of what the job includes is on our cabinet painting page, and the stain route is on cabinet refinishing.

When painting is the right answer

Painting works best on solid wood and sound laminate with a finish that is worn, dated or orange. Honey oak from the 1990s is the classic case: good boxes, good doors, a color that dates the room. Filled and sprayed in a cabinet enamel, the same doors read as new.

It also works for part of a kitchen. Painting only the island in a deep color, or only the lower cabinets, changes the room for a fraction of a full repaint. Many kitchens here were built in the 1970s and 1980s with oak or later thermofoil, which is why this question comes up so often in Indianapolis.

When painting is not enough

Thermofoil that is already peeling near the stove or dishwasher will keep peeling under any paint. Those doors need replacing, and new paint-grade doors on the existing boxes is often the middle route. Water-damaged sink bases need repair or replacement before anything else.

And if you are changing counters, appliances and layout together, painting the old cabinets first rarely makes sense. It is better to decide the full plan first.

Choosing a color and hardware

Whites and off-whites are still the most chosen cabinet colors, but white has undertones that shift with countertops and light: a cool white can look stark against warm granite, a creamy one can look yellow beside white quartz. Hold large samples against your counter and backsplash in daylight before deciding.

Hardware is part of the same decision. New pulls with a different hole spacing mean filling and re-drilling every door before primer, which is simple during a paint job and awkward afterward. If you are changing hardware, choose it before the doors come off, and order a few extra for later repairs.

Why painted cabinets fail, and how to avoid it

Painted cabinets fail for predictable reasons: cooking grease left on the surface, wall paint instead of cabinet enamel, skipped primer, and doors painted in place with brushes in a dusty kitchen. Ask any painter how they degrease, which primer and enamel they use, and whether doors are sprayed off-site.

DIY kits can work on a small vanity, but a full kitchen takes 30 to 50 hours of careful work by one published estimate, and most failures we are called to fix started there. If you are on the fence, a consultation can settle color and route in one visit.
