Exterior trim, soffit and fascia painting in Indianapolis
Peeling fascia, flaking window trim, or a soffit gone gray under the gutters. Trim fails first on a house, and often it is the only part that needs paint this year.

Quick answer
Exterior trim painting in Indianapolis covers fascia boards, soffit panels, window and door casings and porch ceilings. We scrape and sand loose paint, replace rotted boards, caulk joints, prime bare wood the same day and brush two coats of a 100% acrylic exterior enamel. A trim-only job is a fraction of a full exterior repaint and often buys several years.
What the job involves
Why trim fails before siding does
Updated September 2026
Fascia sits behind gutters that overflow, window sills catch rain and hold it, and the bottom of every casing sits in splashback. So trim peels and rots years before the siding around it. Painting only the trim, with proper prep, is often the right call on a house whose siding is still sound.
We use exterior trim enamels from Sherwin-Williams, Benjamin Moore and PPG, brushed rather than sprayed so the edges stay sharp against the siding. Rotted boards are replaced under wood rot repair, and whole-house work follows our exterior painting process.

What moves the price
What moves the price of trim painting
No sourced trim-only figure is quoted here; trim is priced by the linear foot plus carpentry.
- Linear footage Fascia, rake and casing runs are measured by the foot.
- Stories and access Second-story fascia needs extension ladders or staging.
- Rot repair Replacing boards is priced separately from paint.
- Soffit type Wood soffits are painted; aluminum and vinyl are usually washed.
- Window count Every window is brush work at the sill and casings.
- Porch ceilings Beadboard takes more scraping and sanding than flat stock.
- Gutter access Painting behind gutters is easiest when they are off.
Variations of this job
The exterior trim, soffit & fascia painting jobs we get called for
Fascia boards
Fascia is the board behind the gutter, and it takes more water than any painted wood on the house. We check it along its whole length with a probe, especially at gutter joints and downspout outlets where leaks sit, and replace soft sections before painting. Sound fascia is scraped, sanded and primed where bare, and the top edge behind the gutter is painted as far as a brush can reach. If gutters are coming off for replacement, that is the best moment to paint behind them.
Soffit panels and vents
Wood soffits peel from moisture coming out of the attic as much as from weather outside, so we look at the vents while we are up there. Painted-over vent slots are opened so the attic can breathe again, which keeps the new paint from blistering. Aluminum and vinyl soffits usually need washing more than paint; if they are painted, they get a bonding primer first. Soffits are sprayed with the siding and windows masked, or brushed on smaller runs where overspray would reach the roof edge.

Window and door trim
Window and door casings fail at the sill and the bottom of the side casings, where rain runs down and sits. We scrape to sound paint, feather the edges, check sills for rot, re-caulk the joints between trim and siding, and spot-prime bare wood. Windows are painted with the sash closed and the glass lined with a razor afterward. Door trim gets the same treatment, and a front door is often painted the same visit, so the entry reads as one finished piece.

Porch ceilings
Porch ceilings peel in long strips when moisture gets into the beadboard from above or when the last coat was a wall paint rather than an exterior enamel. We scrape loose paint, sand the beadboard joints, prime, and brush two coats of exterior enamel. Pale blue porch ceilings are a long tradition and still the most requested color. Lights and fans are removed or wrapped, and wasp nests are cleared before anyone starts work on a ladder under them in late summer.

Local context
How this work runs around Indianapolis
Indianapolis has no dry season: rain and snowmelt arrive in every month, so fascia behind gutters and sills under windows stay wet far longer than the siding around them. Local painting crews here routinely list carpentry repair of sills and trim as a normal pre-paint step, and our experience matches that; on most houses we walk, at least one fascia corner or window sill needs replacing before trim paint is worth applying.
