A city built by the steel boom
Portage was a small farming community until National Steel opened a plant on Lake Michigan in 1959, the same year Portage incorporated as a town. Bethlehem Steel began a plant partly in Portage in 1963, Portage became a city in 1967, and with 37,926 residents at the 2020 census it is the largest city in Porter County.
