Quick answer
Door painting in Indianapolis matches the prep to the material: steel garage and entry doors are cleaned, sanded, spot-primed with a metal primer and rolled or sprayed; fiberglass is scuffed and bonded; wood is sanded and primed. Most front doors and single garage doors are finished in a day, with hardware removed rather than taped.
What the job involves
Why doors peel when they are painted like walls
Updated September 2026
Garage doors flex every time they open, and front doors get handled, slammed and baked by afternoon sun. Wall paint on either one cracks at the panel joints and peels at the bottom rail. We use exterior enamels from Sherwin-Williams, Benjamin Moore and PPG that stay flexible, over a primer matched to the door material, and we keep dark colors off doors that face full sun unless the product is rated for it.
Garage doors are painted panel by panel in the order the panels move so the finish does not crack at the hinges. Front doors are painted in place or taken down, depending on the weather and the finish. Trim around both follows the exterior trim process.

Choosing between the options
How the door material changes the job
| Consider | Steel | Fiberglass | Wood |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main problem | Chalking and rust at the bottom | Faded factory finish | Peeling at rails and panels |
| Primer | Rust-inhibiting metal primer | Bonding primer | Exterior wood primer |
| Dark colors | Only with a heat-rated product | Only if the maker allows it | Yes, with care in full sun |
| Typical time | A day | A day | A day, plus sanding |
We identify the material at the visit; a magnet and a look at the edge usually settle it.
What moves the price
What moves the price of door painting
No sourced market figure is quoted here; doors are priced by the piece and the prep they need.
- Door type and size A two-car garage door is several times the surface of an entry door.
- Material Steel needs rust treatment, fiberglass a bonding primer, wood sanding.
- Condition Chalking, rust spots and peeling add prep time.
- Color change Dark to light, or a strong new color, can need a third coat.
- Hardware Knobs, plates and knockers are removed and refitted.
- Shutters and storm doors Priced per piece when added.
- Weather Exterior doors need dry, warm-enough days to cure.
Variations of this job
The garage & entry door painting jobs we get called for
Steel garage doors
Steel garage doors fade and chalk more than they rust, but the bottom panel rusts first where it sits on the driveway. We wash off chalk, sand rust spots to bright metal and prime them with a rust-inhibiting primer, then roll and back-brush or spray an exterior acrylic enamel. The door is painted in the closed position with each panel joint worked while the door is cracked open, so the finish does not bridge the hinges and crack when it moves. The weather seal at the bottom is masked, not painted.

Front entry doors
The front door is the one painted surface people touch daily, and it should look perfect up close. We remove the knob, deadbolt, kick plate and knocker, sand and clean the door, prime as the material needs, and brush two coats of a door and trim enamel that levels to a smooth finish. Paneled doors are painted in a set order, panels first and rails and stiles last, so there are no lap marks. The door is left ajar on stops overnight so it does not stick to the weatherstrip.
Storm doors
Aluminum storm doors often come in a factory finish that has faded or oxidized. They can be painted after a thorough cleaning and a bonding primer, with the glass and screen masked. Wood storm and screen doors are sanded and painted like entry doors. Where a storm door is bent or its closer is failing, painting it is rarely worth it, and we will tell you so rather than paint something that is about to be replaced next season anyway.

Exterior shutters
Shutters are painted to match or contrast with the entry door, and they are easiest to do off the house. We take them down, clean and sand them, prime vinyl and wood appropriately, spray or brush them on sawhorses, and rehang them with new fasteners if the old ones are rusted. Vinyl shutters take paint well with a vinyl-safe product and a color no darker than the manufacturer allows, the same heat rule that applies to painted vinyl siding on the rest of the house.

Local context
How this work runs around Indianapolis
In Indianapolis's preservation districts, including Lockerbie Square, Fletcher Place, Chatham Arch and Fountain Square, changes to a building's exterior, down to its paint color, go through the preservation commission, and a front door is the most visible of them. If your house sits in one of those districts, we plan the color with that approval in mind and hold the paint day until it is in hand, rather than repainting a door twice.
Timeline
How long a door is out of service
A front door is usually painted and back in normal use the same day, left ajar on its stops until the enamel sets. A garage door is painted in place and can be operated by evening, though we ask that it stay closed overnight if rain is forecast.
