How to choose a painting contractor in Indianapolis
Most bad paint jobs were visible in the estimate: no scope, no prep, no product named. Here is what to read for before you sign anything.

Quick answer
To choose a painting contractor in Indianapolis, get at least two written estimates that list the surfaces, prep steps, number of coats, product line and sheen, then compare them line by line rather than by the total. Ask for proof of liability insurance, recent local references, and how the painter protects floors, furniture and landscaping.

Start with a written scope, not a number
A painting estimate should read like a plan: which rooms or walls, which surfaces in each (walls, ceilings, trim, doors), what prep will be done, how many coats, which product line and sheen, and what the painter will move, cover and clean. A total with no detail is not a cheaper job, it is an undefined one.
Ask each contractor to put it in writing. Our own scope for interior and exterior jobs is laid out on those pages so you can see what a complete one covers.

Questions worth asking at the estimate
How will you prepare the surfaces, and what do you do about cracks, stains and peeling? Which primer do you use on bare wood, stains and glossy trim? How many coats, and which product line? Who will actually be at the house, and who do I call if something comes up? How long will each room or wall be out of use?
For exteriors, add: how do you wash, what happens if you find rot, and how does weather change the schedule? For older houses built before 1978, ask how paint debris is contained and cleaned up, since older paint may contain lead.
How to compare two bids fairly
Lay the estimates side by side and mark every difference in scope: one includes ceilings, the other does not; one lists two coats, the other one; one names a primer on stains, the other says nothing. Once the scopes match, the price difference usually shrinks, and what remains is often prep time.
A much lower bid almost always means less prep, fewer coats or a cheaper product. That can be a reasonable choice for a rental, but it should be a choice you make knowingly rather than something discovered when the paint fails.

Call (317) 680-1946Red flags
Be cautious with a price given over the phone without anyone looking at the walls, a large upfront payment before any work, pressure to sign the same day, an estimate that names no product, and a painter who dismisses questions about prep. Equally, be wary of anyone who promises the job will be done in a timeframe that leaves no room for drying or weather.
Another warning sign is vagueness about who does the work. You should know who will be in your house and who answers the phone if there is a problem during the job.
Insurance and paperwork
Ask for a certificate of liability insurance and check that it is current. Keep the written estimate, any change agreed during the job and the final invoice together; if colors or products change, get the change in writing so touch-ups later use the right product.
Ask the painter to record colors, sheens and products for each room. That list is worth keeping for future touch-ups, whoever does them.
What a good first visit looks like
A good estimate visit takes time. The painter looks at the walls with a light, tests suspect areas, asks how you use each room, and talks about colors and sheens. They should be able to tell you what they would do differently for your house than for a new one.
If you want colors settled before collecting bids, a color consultation gives every contractor the same brief to price against.
