Water stain on the ceiling: what to do first
A brown ring on the ceiling is a message, not a paint problem. Paint over it before the source is fixed and the ring comes back, usually larger.

Quick answer
When a water stain appears on a ceiling in Indianapolis, first find and stop the source: a roof or flashing leak, an ice dam, a bathroom or plumbing leak above, or condensation from ductwork. Then let the area dry, press the drywall to check for softness, seal the stain with a shellac-based primer and repaint the whole ceiling plane.

Find the source before anything else
Look at what is above the stain. A stain on a top-floor ceiling near an exterior wall usually points to the roof, flashing or an ice dam. A stain under a bathroom points to a toilet seal, tub drain or shower valve. A stain along a line of ductwork in a finished basement or attic space often means condensation on uninsulated ducts in summer.
Note when it appears. A stain that grows after rain is a roof or flashing problem. One that grows after showers is plumbing. One that appears in winter near the eaves is often an ice dam, and one that shows up in humid summer weeks near ducts is condensation.

Why winter stains are common here
Indianapolis averages about 25 inches of snow a year, and snow usually sits from December through March. When heat escaping through an attic melts snow on the roof and it refreezes at the colder eaves, it forms an ice dam, and water backs up under the shingles and into the ceiling below. Stains near the edges of top-floor ceilings in late winter are often that.
Those stains may dry out and stop growing in spring even though nothing was fixed, which is why they return the next winter. The fix belongs to the roofer and the attic insulation, before any paint.
Check the drywall
Once the source is stopped and the ceiling has had time to dry, press gently on the stained area. Firm drywall with a stain can be sealed and painted. Soft, crumbly, sagging or bulging drywall has lost its strength and has to be cut out and replaced, and the insulation above it should be checked and replaced if it stayed wet.
If there is any sag, do not push on it; water may be held above it. Cut-out and patching is covered on our drywall repair page.
Source fixed? We will seal it and repaint the ceiling so it disappears.

Water stains carry minerals and tannins that bleed through latex paint within days, even if the first coat looks perfect. The stain needs a stain-blocking primer first, and for water stains a shellac-based primer is the most reliable. It dries fast and locks the stain in.
After the primer, repaint the whole ceiling plane rather than just the spot. A patch of fresh ceiling white on an older ceiling shows as a brighter square, especially under raking light from a window.
When to call for help
Call a roofer or plumber first if the source is not obvious or still active. Call us once it is fixed, for the drywall and paint. Ceilings are the hardest surface to paint evenly, which is why a stain repair often ends with repainting the room's ceiling; see ceiling painting.
If the stained ceiling has popcorn texture, painting it can make the texture let go. That is often the moment to have the popcorn tested and removed.
What not to do
Do not paint over an active leak. Do not use a standard wall primer on a water stain and expect it to hold. Do not spot-paint a small circle and hope it blends. And do not ignore a stain that keeps growing, because the damage above it grows too.
Taking a photo of the stain each week while waiting for a repair is a simple way to confirm the leak has actually stopped before any paint goes on.
